Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," said a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
